Overview

Our Teaching Tolerance project combats prejudice among our nation’s youth while promoting equality, inclusiveness and equitable learning environments in the classroom. We produce an array of anti-bias resources that we distribute, free of charge, to educators across the country – award-winning classroom documentaries, lesson plans and curricula, Teaching Tolerance magazine, and more

 

The professional development trainer delivers in-person trainings on anti-bias and social justice education topics to diverse groups of educators across the country.  This position can work remotely.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver in-person professional development for educators. Topics may include but are not limited to: 
    • Embedding social justice standards in the curriculum
    • Promoting empathy
    • Improving school climate
    • Addressing implicit bias
    • Practicing culturally responsive discipline and classroom management 
  • Assist, as needed, in the development of trainings and materials that align to the Teaching Tolerance vision and mission;
  • Provide pre and post-training support to include but not limited to collaborating with school personnel to identify training needs, modifying training materials as needed, coordinating evaluation administration and data analysis, acting as a general support and resource for schools;
  • Reports on training and ensures contacts are incorporated into appropriate systems, develops case studies and participates in program assessment.;
  • Research and cultivate relationships with schools, districts, museums and other venues that could host Teaching Tolerance trainings;
  • Provide K-12 expertise and curricular support for print and online publications; 

  • Collaborate with the larger department such as other Teaching Tolerance trainers and the professional development administrator as well as with selected partners within and outside the SPLC on 
projects related to social justice education issues and,

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Work Experience

  • Master’s degree required; 

  • Instructional experience in a K-12 setting required;
  • Experience in backward planning and standards-based instruction and, 

  • A minimum of three years developing and delivering professional development activities and/or in-person teacher training. 


Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and appreciation for multicultural teaching, anti-bias education and culturally responsive pedagogy;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of educational best practices, for adults and children; 

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion; 

  • High level of organization, and the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities;
  • Ability to work independently under limited supervision;
  • Effective written and oral communication skills; 

  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative work environment while working remotely; 

  • Proven facilitation skills, particularly when addressing emotionally charged topics;
  • Ability to facilitate diverse groups of varying size;
  • Ability to successfully navigate the needs of challenging or resistant participants while ensuring that training objectives are achieved and,
  • Flexibility to travel extensively throughout the United States.

Other Special Considerations:

This job is performed under general office conditions, and is not subject to any strenuous physical demands or dangerous conditions.

 

This is a two year fellowship position.
