Overview

Under general supervision, provide clerical, administrative, and office management support for the Economic Justice Project and the LGBT Rights and Special Litigation Project, as well as other related duties for the entire legal staff.

 

The Economic Justice Project of the Southern Poverty Law Center seeks to ensure that people living in poverty in the Deep South, especially communities of color, are not punished or exploited because of their economic status.  Our work is focused in three main areas:  (1) ending debtors’ prisons and reforming court debt abuses; (2) protecting consumers by ending predatory lending and abusive debt collection practices; and (3) protecting access to safety nets for the poor, including Medicaid and SNAP (food stamps).  Over the past few years, our Project has worked to end debtors’ prisons in Montgomery, Alabama, Alexander City, Alabama, and Bogalusa, Louisiana; restore access to TennCare (Tennessee’s Medicaid Program) for thousands who were facing life-threatening medical conditions and whose applications were ignored during the rollout of the Affordable Care Act; challenge the imposition of work requirements as a precondition to Medicaid eligibility document the abusive predatory lending industry in Alabama in an on-going push for state and federal regulatory reform; drive the largest private “probation” company out of Alabama; and end discriminatory wealth-based bail practices in municipal courts in Alabama.

Our Project is growing and looking to expand our critical work.  We are looking to augment our dynamic and talented team with passionate individuals who care about our issues and believe in and identify with our clients, as we look to continue our work.  

Responsibilities

  • Compiles and enters data to litigation software and electronic databases
  • Schedules and participates in departmental and other meetings as directed
  • Composes correspondence and reports as directed
  • Creates and maintains general office files (both hard copy and electronic file)
  • Serves as human resource liaison for the practice groups
  • Handles printing, copying, and distribution of documents as directed
  • Processes requisitions, invoices, and expense vouchers for coordination with the organization’s Finance and Administration department
  • Receives, sorts and distributes incoming and outgoing mail, faxes, etc.
  • Provides information within scope of knowledge or refers to appropriate individuals
  • Acts as the receptionist, greeting and signing in visitors for the practice groups
  • Coordinates support for office equipment, restocking supplies, and facilities support
  • Plans and coordinates event logistics for team meetings, retreats and conferences, including planning a conference to be held by SPLC for outside groups
  • Plans and coordinates logistical support for trials, and hearings

Qualifications

  • Excellent organization and time management skills, some college preferred
  • At least 5 years of experience with knowledge of office management principles/practices
  • Experience with legal organizations / law firms preferred

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

 

  • Superb organization, detail-orientation, project management, and execution skills
  • Excellent communication, telephone, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent writing/grammar skills
  • Excellent computer skills; must be highly proficient in word processing, spreadsheet and database programs
  • Ability to use common office equipment (typewriter, copier, printer, etc.)
  • Ability to master various litigation and administrative software
  • Exercises the highest degree of discretion
  • Must have continual attention-to-detail in composting, typing, and proofing materials, establishing priorities and meeting deadlines
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands
  • Must be a team player, with a heavy emphasis on positive person-to-person interaction
