The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is a leader in the fight against hate and bigotry in the United States. SPLC seeks an outreach paralegal for its Children’s Rights team in Florida. The Florida Children’s Rights team is committed to ensuring that all schools in the state have the resources necessary to educate all children, no matter the child’s race, sex, national origin, religion, disability status, or poverty status. This may include, but is not limited to: addressing disproportionality and discrimination in school discipline, referrals to alternative school, expulsion, and school-based arrest; curbing seclusion and restraint; pushing back against school-imposed fines and citations; addressing a variety of equity issues (school funding, deregulation, privatization, vouchers, segregation/re-segregation); and improving children’s access to Medicaid and other vital health services.
The advocate will perform extensive outreach to current and prospective clients and community organizations and assist with mobilization, field investigation, and advocacy. The advocate will also assist the Center’s attorneys with case management and support, conduct research, and organize information. Outreach and organizing will involve substantial overnight travel.
There is one position vacancy located in Miami, FL.
• Work with attorneys and advocates on multi-strategy campaigns;
• Draft written communication to clients, advocacy partners, and members of the general public while managing and maintaining routine client communication (written, by phone, and in person);
• Dtaft and develop materials to foster and execute organizing and outreach strategies to current and prospective clients, community partners, and stakeholders;
• Mobilize and support community partners and stakeholders to advocate for policy changes affecting their community;
• Research, investigate, and document facts for cases, including conducting detailed intake interviews;
• Track down and obtain documents;
• Conduct legal, social science, and factual research;
• Prepare and organize research, notes, and legal documents;
• Perform discovery information management and trial preparation; and
• Willingness to travel and work long hours, including weekends, as needed.
Education and Related Work Experience:
• College degree or relevant work experience;
• At least one year of experience working with and for socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, including at-risk youth, children with disabilities, and individuals involved in the juvenile justice systems;
• At least one year of experience with community organizing, mobilizing, or outreach; and
• Fluency in Spanish or Creole preferred but not required.

• Strong organizational skills, follow-through, and flexibility around changing priorities and deadlines;
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team to develop new campaigns and legal initiatives;
• Ability to work on several campaigns at once in conjunction with Center attorneys;
• Strong written and oral communication skills;
• Commitment to and passion for social justice;
• Understanding and sensitivity to issues client populations face;
• Commitment to a non-hierarchical, client-centered approach to advocacy and ability to work on delicate issues in a compassionate and sensitive manner;
• Experience working with diverse groups of partners; and
• Willingness to learn and use internal computer systems and databases.
